What To Look For When Hiring A Calligrapher

What To Look For When Hiring A Calligrapher - True North Paper Co.

As a bride, there is so much thought and detail that goes into your wedding, and it’s undoubtedly one of the most special days of your life.

As a small business owner, your logo is such a critical visual aspect of your business, and has the power to attract your ideal clients.

And it’s hiring a good calligrapher to work with that can make or break these really important (and fun) things!

No pressure, right!?

How do you know if you’ve hired the right person? What should you do to make sure it’s a good fit? Those are things I’m going to break down in today’s blog post - what you should look for before you hire a designer - so that you have an amazing experience, whether you’re getting ready to walk down the aisle or working your butt off in your business.

Let’s dive in, shall we! 5 things to look for when hiring a Calligrapher:

1. Do you get along with them

Nah, you don’t have to be instant BFF’s, but you there should be some friendly comradery. You want to be able to communicate your ideas well, and be confident that that person understands and is a fan of your vision. Having a professional, yet friendly relationship is a key aspect in making sure your experience with a calligrapher is a good one, especially because they are involved in something so personal to you!

You should be able to easily tell this within a few email exchanges or consultation call. Are you clicking? Are they excited about your project?

2. Do you like their style

You might think that as long as the person you hired is a calligrapher, you’re good to go. Well, not so fast. There are a lot of different styles of calligraphy, and they range from formal and modern to more edgy. And yes, while a calligrapher should be able to take on a bunch of different styles, you may notice that on their website or social media that there is a certain style that they gravitate towards and has really become their “signature”. If you love that style, and are looking for something similar, you are in the right place! But if you’re wanting your project to have a different style of calligraphy, double-check with the calligrapher to see if that’s an option they offer, or keep searching till you find someone whose work you absolutely love and is consistent with what you want!

Again, just because you see a calligrapher who has a raw and edgy style doesn’t mean they can’t rock a more flourished and formal look. It’s just something to be aware of that styles of calligraphy can vary greatly and often times a calligrapher is drawn to a certain style and has mastered that!

3. Price

This is a big one, eh! Pricing for calligraphy services can vary greatly depending on what you’re looking for. Have a budget in mind, and search for calligraphers who fall within that price range.

4. Testimonials

What are others saying about them? Seeing what past clients and customers have said about their experience with a particular calligrapher can give you a little peek into what it would be like if you were to work with them! And let’s face it, when you’re entrusting someone who you don’t know with things that are really important and personal to you, you want to feel confident in that decision and testimonials can help a lot with that! Heck, I’m constantly looking up testimonials and reviews before committing to something.

5. Location

One of the wonderful things about working with calligraphers is that they don’t necessarily need to be local to you! Logo design files can easily be sent from anywhere and everywhere. And once carefully packaged, wedding details can be sent in the mail (I’ve sent everything from invitations, and place cards to giant wooden signs across the country!). But more large scale projects are going to cost more to ship, so if you’re trying to keep your budget down, finding someone local might be advantageous as you won’t be paying as high shipping costs. So keep geography in mind when you’re on your calligrapher search.

There you have it friends! I hope this list helps to equip you in your calligrapher search! It takes some trust, but I hope these tips help you feel more confident when making a decision!
